Holy Rosary Parish, one of the first Catholic parishes for blacks in Texas, had its beginnings in Holy Rosary Elementary School, which was established in 1886 by Bishop Nicholas A. Gallagherqv of Galveston and staffed by Dominican Sisters.
Maud Cuney-Hare, black musician and writer, was born in Galveston on February 16, 1874, to Adelina (Dowdy) and Norris Wright Cuney. After graduating from Central High School in Galveston in 1890,
